A Real Wedding that joins the community

pinit
wedding ceremony

This Real Wedding takes place at the Fremont Abbey in Seattle, WA. A beautiful old brick church building (originally a Lutheran church built in 1914) with a warm, vintage feel. The location was chosen by the bride and groom for several reasons, but the foremost motive was their excitement to work with a nonprofit organization, which added a meaningful element to their day.

Our bride tells us about the planning of her wedding, “…I found quickly that it is easy to feel lost in the wedding industry "machine." For that reason, we attempted to keep our wit's about us while planning and work with vendors we liked and supported. We hoped to invest in organizations that seemed to represent integrity and generosity in their business. While the Abbey does host a limited number of weddings every year, its focus is on local arts programs and we really liked the idea of supporting through our venue fee, as it felt like a way to give back in the midst of the chaos of planning. That said, we absolutely appreciated the architecture and atmosphere of the Abbey, in addition to its artistic mission!” Read more about the experience of Sarah and Chris’s special day.

What was your highlight of the day?

My highlight of the day is less about a specific moment, and more about the overall big picture of the day. Almost every part of our day was assisted, designed, or implemented by family and friends, so it was without doubt a collaborative effort. Chris grew up in Boise, I grew up in Portland, and we chose to get married in Seattle, where we had met and dated--so to have all our worlds collide together for that weekend was an incredible gift. This was particularly evident when a group of friends we had met in Portland or Seattle--a group of people now literally spread out across the globe, with many of them meeting for the first time that weekend--surprised us at the reception with a choreographed dance. That's right: in between all the prep of decorations, clothes, the rehearsal dinner, and a million other details, our friends were staying up late to hold secret dance rehearsals. We felt like the luckiest people in the world in that moment! Chris and I view the wedding day itself as an example of a community working together to create something lovely and meaningful. We can see their fingerprints all over the day, and this has made us smile and happy cry every time we reminisce.

Is there some unique you choose to do for your special day.?

We also served brunch for dinner! We served up a delicious waffle bar with various toppings, quiche, scones, and cheesy potatoes, and had mimosas and a coffee cart amongst our drink options. We love breakfast foods, and thought this would be a fun twist on the more formal dinner served at evening weddings.

Would have liked to do anything differently?

I would have taken a bit more time off of work in the week leading up to the wedding. I was starting to feel really frazzled until I finally caught up on sleep two days before the wedding, and everything looked so much more beautiful and relaxed after that night of rest!

I would also delegate more tasks and details (I think this is a common woe among DIY brides). For the first few months of planning, I worried about putting too much on my loved ones, so I tried to do as much as I could alone. I realized that they really wanted to help out, not only because they loved us, but because it gave them a sense of contributing! It was fun for them to see their contributions involved when the day came--they felt some ownership in the day, which was fun to see.

What advice could you give to couples planning their upcoming wedding?

Make sure to schedule time with your fiancé where the goal is to relax and have fun, not wedding plan. It can be easy to feel like that's all you should be working on, but the whole point of the planning is a joyous commitment of love and faithfulness you'll be making at the end! Don't forget to take care of the relationship in the midst of the madness of planning.

Utilize friends and family as much as you can, because it's more fun to work with people you already know and love--but use a day-of wedding planner! The people who know and love the bride and groom should be relaxing and enjoying the wedding day, not running around trying to make sure everything got taken care of. I planned most of the wedding, but communicated all the details and plans to my day-of coordinator. From the rehearsal dinner on, any questions about timing, details, or logistics went to her.

Use a checklist that breaks down what needs to be done by when. I think this helped me in my moments of feeling totally overwhelmed--I would remember, this is all I have to do for this week. I will worry about the rest as it presents itself. It made everything feel more bite-sized and managable.

Also, build some moments in where you can be alone for a moment or two on the big day. It's wonderful to be surrounded by loved ones, but I was glad for the few times I could be alone and let the significance of the commitment I was making really sink in.

Intimate real wedding celebration with family and friends

Today’s real wedding we join Jessica and Justin as they share their special day with us. We loved how fun and intimate the day was for them and their guests. Jessica’s highlight of the day for her was her walk down the aisle towards her now husband. She tells us “I did not think I would get so emotional, but I broke down crying. It was such an overwhelming feeling to be celebrated and loved by him and all my friends and family.”

If they were to do anything differently, Jessica tells us “I would have liked to have more time with my wedding party and photographer.” having more time for photos between the ceremony or the reception, or perhaps done a first look.

Their advice for future brides and grooms “If you don't get a planner, hire a coordinator! It was the best thing I ever did. She was worth every penny.”

Whimsical Real Wedding with Floating Lanterns

pinit
beautiful and whimsical wedding outfit

Today’s Real Wedding features Melanie and Jordan in Gol Gol, Australia. We loved how beautiful and whimsical everything was for this wedding.  From the clothing to the decor to the floating lanterns. Melanie tells us "there were so many highlights! Seeing Jordan was a big one. Also seeing all the bridal party all dressed together for the first time. Seeing all the planning paying off. We also had a great MC who made many highlights."

Is there anything you would have liked to do differently?

I would walk down the aisle slower and look at my groom and not the ground! The ceremony goes so fast and I wish I could take it all in more, without all the nerves.

Do you have any advice to couples that are planning their upcoming Wedding?

When there is an upcoming wedding, so many people step forward with suggestions and 'you should do it like this' suggestions. But I think listen to what you and your partner wants! Its the only way you will be happy with your day

What was your highlight of the day?

The entire day was the best ever. A million highlights strung together. But if we have to pick... We chose to not see each other until the ceremony, so laying our eyes on one another for the first time was a moment we will never forget. Another highlight was our first dance. We had a family member sing our song (Songbird, by Fleetwood Mac), and the whole room was mesmerized by her voice. It was pretty surreal. And one last one - one of my personal favorites - was when Matty gave a speech at our reception. My new husband had me doubled over laughing one minute, followed by tears streaming down my face the next.

Do you have any advice to couples that are planning their upcoming wedding?

If you can, host a welcome party for all of your guests the night prior. This gave us an opportunity to truly talk with everyone for hours, so when it came time to party the next night, we could let loose and just have fun.

Have fun leading up to the wedding with your bride or groom to be. Those memories you share leading up to the big day will make it all the more special.

Most of all….Relax and have fun. Remember what it is all about - you, the love of your life, your family, your friends. And an epic dance party. The second you lose sight of that, the second you start wasting time thinking about things that don't matter. You will not remember what the flowers at Table 7 looked liked, but you will remember what your mom's face looked like when she put you in that gown.

Beautiful Real Wedding incorprates tradition

Today’s Real Wedding features the union between Lauren Coalson and Chris Hardy in Atlanta, GA. We loved this wedding for all of the traditions & special touches the couple incorporated to truly make this day a part of them.

What was your highlight of the day?

The most special moment of our wedding day for both of us was the ceremony. Everyone always tells you how quickly the day will go by, so I wanted to be sure to really soak in and be completely present at the ceremony.

ceremony tradition

We incorporated the Celtic tradition of tying the knot into our vows, which was very meaningful and special. A stole was fastened around our embraced hands and as the sweet words were being read. I will remember that part vividly for the rest of my life.

What kinds of special touches did you choose to have on your special day?

Chris & I always joke that someday we will move out of the city & own a farm, so for the escort cards we had all different gold-painted farm animal figurines with the guests names tied around their necks written on kraft paper with peach yarn. We knew they were a big hit because they were all stolen by our guests.

pinit
fun and creative name cards

In terms of the design of the room, the swinging benches filled with flowers hanging over the tables mixed with the ombre peach colored ribbon and café lights that went from the outer tables to the center of the dance floor, gave the room such a special and magical feel. I felt like I was underneath a carousel all evening. And candles covered every space possible. It was so lovely.

In the months leading up to the big day, I collected a variety of vintage china, so each guests at the estate table would have a different plate. They gave the table such a great, authentic Southern look. We had fried chicken, mac n’ cheese-the works. All served family style. It felt like you were having Sunday dinner with your family. I wish I had enough time to find plates for every guest!

I purchased a vintage suitcase & vintage postcards from Mexico to use as our guestbook. We asked guest to write down marriage advice to read on our honeymoon, which was so fun to read and something we will always treasure.

Do you have any advice to couples that are planning their upcoming wedding?

It is a fun process, but with full time jobs, it was a lot to manage, so we wanted to give ourselves a year to plan. If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed, adopt “no wedding Wednesdays” or weekends where wedding planning is not allowed. Everyone needs a break every once in a while. We had our vision but no idea how to execute it, so if you have room in your budget, hire an event/floral designer and day of coordinator! That was our saving grace!

pinit
bride and groom bubbles

Thinking back, is there anything you would have liked to do differently?

It goes without saying that no wedding day goes off without a hitch. I stumbled down the staircase during our entrance and put out some of the candles with my dress-thankfully, it wasn’t a full on tumble. Moments like that turn out to be hilarious memories that you will always look back on and laugh about. That being said, I wouldn’t change a thing!

The best part of the day was after we were married and had done some photos and had 20 minutes to ourselves before we were thrust back at out our adoring fans. Taking that time alone to sit and be happy together without any stress was really lovely moment.

What would I do differently? I would have kept it a little smaller and more intimate.

Advice for other couples? Don't sweat the small stuff. Seriously. No one is going to remember all of your decorations, ( I spent months making those pompoms) and while many of my girlfriends told me that everything was beautiful and the food was great... the comment I get the most is that EVERYONE had so much fun. I mean, we had a soul train dance off for crying out loud! .

Tell us about your special day.

Our wedding reception was held at Michaels parent's house in Milton, GA. It was an intimate party with only our closest friends and family. The house was wonderfully decorated and was the perfect setting for a family affair.

The wedding reception was wonderful! Everything was perfect and we had a blast!

Do you have any advice to couples that are planning their upcoming wedding?

Our advice: As much as you plan and stress yourself before the big day you really need to enjoy every moment of it. Once the day comes it is over in a fly. And don't forget to eat!

Unique Greeehouse Wedding

Adam & Sara were joined together as husband and wife among family and friends, just as they had hoped for on their wedding day. The bride tells us, “For Adam and me, our wedding day was most importantly a celebration of us. When we talked about how we wanted our day to feel, we wanted to make it a really fun party. We wanted our family and friends to have a great time and leave feeling like our day was uniquely ‘Sara and Adam’“. Read more from the bride herself in today’s Real Wedding as she gives us her recap of their special day.

pinit
ceremony

“We were married on June 1st at Planterra Conservatory in Michigan. Our ceremony was absolutely perfect. It was personal and quirky and full of love. We worked with our officiant to design our own ceremony. We asked our friends to choose their own readings, we included stories from family and friends, and we wrote our own vows. One of my absolute favorite moments of the day came after Adam’s vows when he wowed the crowd and everyone started applauding! It was such a fun, beautiful moment."

pinit
greenhouse venue

The beautiful venue was one of the many things we absolutely loved about our wedding. The greenhouse provided a gorgeous backdrop and it was easy for us to decorate by adding just a few of our own personal touches. Adam is a teacher and poker player, so our program and table numbers were chalkboards and we added vintage poker chips to the boutonnieres. I collect milk glass and floral hankies, so we used those for the centerpieces and ceremony space. Those little things were significant to us and made the space feel so much more special.

It was so nice to hear after the wedding that people had a good time, that they thought it was cool we did what we wanted, and that we seemed so relaxed and happy. I think a lot of people get too caught up in planning and forget the reason for the celebration.

Advice for couples planning their wedding: Relax and have fun with it, it is after all your day. You shouldn’t let other peoples opinions change what you do. Realize that it is just one day, and it isn’t worth stressing out over.

Anything you would have done differently, Rebecca? I had to hide in the hot kitchen before the ceremony so Chris wouldn’t see me before I walked down the isle…If I could redo something, I would find a better place to hide.

Do you have any advice to couples that are planning their upcoming wedding?

Yes, start early with your planning and don't be afraid to delegate jobs to close friends and family (and who you trust to get stuff done). Also, have fun with the planning process - work with vendors who are fun, creative and easy to work with (which I was lucky to have!).

Lastly, stay true to yourself and don't waste time and money on details that are not "you." Instead, focus on ways to creatively express who you both are and your love for each other on your wedding day. So be creative and be yourself.
